Definition · The fundamental axiom of analysis#

If,

  • an∈R∀n∈Na_n \in \mathbb{R} \forall n \in \mathbb{N}
  • A∈RA \in R
  • an≤an+1∀n∈Na_{n} \leq a_{n+1} \forall n \in \mathbb{N}
  • an<A∀n∈Na_{n} < A \forall n \in \mathbb{N}

Then, ∃a∈R:an→n as n→∞\exists a \in \mathbb{R} : a_{n} \to n \text{ as } n \to \infty.

Theorem · 1.35 Intermediate Value Theorem#

If,

  • f:[a,b]→Rf: [a,b] \to \mathbb{R} is continuous
  • f(a)≥0≥f(b)f(a) \geq 0 \geq f(b)

Then, ∃c∈[a,b]:f(c)=0\exists c \in [a,b] : f(c) = 0

Theorem · 1.42 The mean value inequality#

Let,

  • U=(α,β)U=\left( \alpha, \beta \right) be an open interval on R\mathbb{R}.
  • a,b∈Ua,b \in U and a<ba<b
  • f:U→Rf: U \to \mathbb{R} be differentiable
  • f′(t)≤K ∀t∈Uf'(t) \leq K \ \forall t \in U

Then, f(b)−f(a)≤K(b−a)f(b) - f(a) \leq K (b-a)

Definition · Supremum#

Let A⊆RA \subseteq \mathbb{R} be non empty.

α\alpha is the least upper bound (supremum) of A if

  1. α≥a ∀a∈A\alpha \geq a \ \forall a \in A.
  2. β≥a ∀a∈A  ⟹  β≥α\beta \geq a \ \forall a \in A \implies \beta \geq \alpha
Theorem 3.7 Supremum Principle#

Let,

  • A⊆RA \subseteq \mathbb{R} be non empty.
  • AA is bounded above, ∃K∈R:a≤K ∀a∈A\exists K \in \mathbb{R} : a \leq K\ \forall a \in A

Then, AA has a supremum.
